Afternoon tea
Afternoon tea was invented by Anna Maria Russell, the 7th duchess of Belford, in 1840. Now it is, for the English, a way of sweetening the shock of a world gone mad. Once a month, there is an article written by English-speaking journalists in “Courrier international”. To-day it is about the British habit of taking tea, home made cakes and sandwiches at 4 o’clock. It is very interesting !
It seems to cheer them up when they sit down and take their time over a nice cup of tea. with delicious things to eat. They forget all the problems, the crisis and the tough things around. They find comfort in this sweet tradition.

Re: Afternoon tea
Hi Muriel,
Afternoon tea is also very Australian.
Even working in the hospital, we have our "arvo" tea break from about 3pm.
But this is just a quick cup of coffee, a cake, and maybe a "fag" !!!
I suppose the rich people have a more sophisticated afternoon tea, maybe cucumber sandwiches and strawberries with cream (a favourite of the Queen !)
