Maori culture

Message  MurielB le Ven 30 Mar - 14:22

The Māori people are the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and first arrived in waka hourua (voyaging canoes) from their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki more than 1000 years ago. Today, Māori make up over 14 percent of the population. Their language and culture has a major impact on all facets of New Zealand life.

New zealanders are often referred to as kiwis which is an affectionate name. I have read in vocable that a film called "Get the flock out here ! it's the kiwi killer sheep !"has frightened the New Zealanders a couple of years ago; In this country there are 3 million sheep and 40 million people. That fictional horror film was about killer sheep which rise up and turn on humans.

Anyway, what comes to my mind when I think of the Maori culture are the tattoos and their famous haka, a weaponry danse you can see above.

Have you got anything else to add ?
