What is permaculture ?

Message  MurielB le Mer 21 Aoû - 11:49

1.Permaculture is an innovative framework for creating sustainable ways of living.
2.It is a practical method of developing ecologically harmonious, efficient and productive systems that can be used by anyone, anywhere.

By thinking carefully about the way we use our resources - food, energy, shelter and other material and non-material needs - it is possible to get much more out of life by using less. We can be more productive for less effort, reaping benefits for our environment and ourselves, for now and for generations to come.

This is the essence of permaculture - the design of an ecologically sound way of living - in our households, gardens, communities and businesses. It is created by cooperating with nature and caring for the earth and its people.

Permaculture is not exclusive - its principles and practice can be used by anyone, anywhere:
•City flats, yards and window boxes
•Suburban and country houses/garden
•Allotments and smallholdings
•Community spaces
•Farms and estates
•Countryside and conservation areas
•Commercial and industrial premises
•Educational establishments
•Waste ground

Permaculture encourages us to be resourceful and self-reliant. It is not a dogma or a religion but an ecological design system which helps us find solutions to the many problems facing us - both locally and globally..

Writer Emma Chapman defines it as:

"Permaculture, originally 'Permanent Agriculture', is often viewed as a set of gardening techniques, but it has in fact developed into a whole design philosophy, and for some people a philosophy for life. Its central theme is the creation of human systems which provide for human needs, but using many natural elements and drawing inspiration from natural ecosystems. Its goals and priorities coincide with what many people see as the core requirements for sustainability."

Permaculture tackles how to grow food, build houses and create communities, and minimise environmental impact at the same time. Its principles are being constantly developed and refined by people throughout the world in very different climates and cultural circumstances.

Hi Muriel, hi everyone,

Americans have to fight hard but little by little, they succeed.
On the other hand, Europe oblige France to go backwards.

Finally, what's the best?

Susan posted this, asking good questions:

Millions Against Monsanto by OrganicConsumers.org

Thanks to you, the Grocery Manufacturers Association’s (GMA) membership roster is a little shorter today. Weil Lifestyle, the company founded by heath guru Dr. Andrew Weil, cut its ties with the GMA after 24,623 of you signed our petition pointing out the hypocrisy of telling customers and followers that GMOs should be labeled, while paying dues to the largest contributor to the campaign (NO on 522) to defeat GMO labeling in Washington State.

The GMA, which donated $2.2 million last year to defeat a GMO labeling initiative in California (Proposition 37), has contributed another $2.2 million so far this year to defeat I-522.

So, who’s next? Safeway? Starbucks? Target? Let’s keep the pressure on these big-name brands. Maybe they’ll follow Dr. Weil’s lead?

TAKE ACTION: Tell Safeway, Starbucks and Target: Stop bankrolling campaigns to defeat GMO Labeling!

Don't let Bayer overturn the ban on bee-killing pesticides

-> Don't let Bayer overturn the ban on bee-killing pesticides
Wow. Bayer has just sued the European Commission to overturn a ban on the pesticides that are killing millions of bees around the world. A huge public push won this landmark ban only months ago -- and we can't sit back and let Big Pesticide overturn it while the bees vanish.

In a major victory brought upon by serious activism and public outrage, new legislation changes will shut down the Monsanto Protection Act rider that granted Monsanto protection from legal action and was set to renew on September 30th.

Hi Muriel, hi everyone,

In France we often think Americans don't do anything to counter junk food, GMOs, obesity, etc.
That's true that in the US, people are free to enterprise but when they start, they are efficient.

Another victory (in fact oodles of victories here and there):

Nation's largest food makers' trade group, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, is donating big money to oppose I-522, but on whose behalf? @[108451807072:274:WhiteWave Foods] uses some of the profits it earns by selling you its #organic and non-GMO products, to support one of the #GMO labeling movement’s fiercest enemies: The @[132644783412552:274:Grocery Manufacturers Association] (#GMA). The GMA is spending $7.2 million (so far) in Washington State to defeat I-522, a citizens’ initiative that would mandate labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in foods sold in grocery stores. It’s time to take action! First, Go to White Wave’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WhiteWaveFoods and post: "Dear White Wave, I cannot in good conscience purchase your products with the knowledge that some of that money will be funneled through the GMA and used to defeat I-522. I am calling on you today to protest the GMA’s financial support of anti-labeling campaigns by withdrawing from the trade group, and to show your support for our right to know by making a financial contribution to the Yes on 522 Second, Take Action by Sending an email to White Wave: http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50865/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=12139&track=FB&tag=FB

Hi everyone,

Things are moving in the States.

A combination of subsidies to overproduce corn following World War II, and cheap meat being processed in overcrowded farms—and fed some of this very corn—has cr...eated the perfect storm for bad health. Right now, processed corn is present in at least one-quarter of all food products in a supermarket… In 1990, it was difficult to find a state with a population of obese residents making up over 14% of the citizenry. But just 20 years later, there wasn't a single state in the union with obesity rates that low! Have you ever heard of SynBio? It's the new name for genetic engineering and it's being developed right now. The plan is to create synthetic versions of engineered ingredients. The advent of synthetic biology raises thorny economic and regulatory issues, such as whether such yeast-made ingredients can be called natural and whether developing countries dependent on these crops will be hurt. In a few hours the polls will close in Washington State, and in a few days we should know the outcome of the @[516766995052122:274:Yes on 522] vote. Whatever happens, we want to express tremendous gratitude for our customers who have supported us and this cause! We also know that as important as this vote is, it is just one skirmish in the ongoing battle for transparency in labeling and the protection of organic sustainable agriculture. Thank you and may we all fight on in joy and righteousness!

However:

I have a feeling there will be the need to fight on. Against corporate greed, lies, chemical companies, money laundering and voters who would believe big buck TV ads rather than use any informative reasoning.

Deadline to stop the FDA from approving GMO salmon

Any day now, the first genetically modified animal ever to enter our food supply, AquaBounty salmon, could be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

This fish hasn't been proven safe for humans. But the FDA may approve it based on a limited, flawed, and inadequate study — despite the fact that the same study identified elevated allergy-causing potential,1 and elevated levels of the IGF-1 growth hormone, which is linked to colon, prostate and breast cancers.

That’s why we’re joining Senator Jeff Merkley in a last-ditch effort to demand the FDA reject approval of GMO salmon.
