Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment f or future generations."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were truly recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribbling's. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But too bad we didn't do the green thing back then.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Message  MurielB Mar 14 Jan - 9:02

Hi everyone

http://digitaljournal.com/article/361072
2005, Mujica married Lucía Topolansky, a fellow Tupamaro member and current senator, after many years of co-habitation. They have no children and live on an austere farm in the outskirts of Montevideo where they cultivate chrysanthemums as an economic activity, having declined to live in the opulent presidential palace or use its staff. His humble lifestyle is reflected by his choice of an aging Volkswagen Beetle as transport. His wife owns the farm they live on
First I had a look at the Uruguay president's life (because it helps to understand people). It is true that he is not in the consumer-driven society and I think that everyone can behave just like him.
No I don't think that it is inevitable.

Muriel, I agree with you. We can appreciate new technologies and, at the same time, live in a better way with more collaboration, consuming less energy and raw materials. In fact, if we live more together, obviously, we are going to use less energy. Love is the future of humanity  Smile

My thought of the day is: If everyone in the world could behave like Uruguay’s president José Mujica, why do we resign ourselves to being led like docile sheep by the consumer-driven society?

Incidentally, it’s interesting to read below what U.S. citizens think about Mujica…

Philippe-Henri

URUGUAY’S PRESIDENT: A ROLE MODEL FOR AMERICA?…

by Tonya Stiles, Co-Publisher of the Canyon Country Zephyr.

The United States really isn’t doing well these days. You may not know it, listening to American news. You’ll still hear from the mouthpieces of every public personality that America remains the best country on earth. That, despite our current setbacks, we are still the “shining beacon” of freedom and whatnot. Of course, they offer nothing to back up this claim. No studies, or rankings, to show that living in America makes a person happier, healthier or more fulfilled than he or she would be living anywhere else. To our minds, it’s self-evident. All Americans are created better. And, of course, a corollary to the belief that we’re the best at everything is the belief that we have nothing to learn from anyone else. And we’ll continue believing it, so long as we still excel in the two arts of seduction: finance, which convinces us that money is born out of thin air and then disappears it before our eyes, and pop culture, which intoxicates us with our own vision—only prettier, happier and with greater worldly belongings.

Meanwhile, in the real world, more evidence stacks up against us. The most recent, the U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean’s Statistical Yearbook, which ranked the U.S. 11th out of 19 American countries for income inequality. Some of the countries with greater income equality than ours: Venezuela, Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador. These Latin American countries, which were notorious through the 80s and 90s for their ill treatment of the poor and the lavish lifestyles of their wealthy, spent the last fifteen years or so lifting millions of their poor into the middle class. At the same time, in the U.S., millions of the middle class fell into poverty while we continued to reward the rich.

So who is the true “shining beacon” of the Americas? That would be Uruguay, which boasts a rating of 8.0 on the income inequality scale and a president who lives on the same income as his average citizen.

José Mujica.

José Mujica is certainly an anomaly among world leaders. His daily life, working with his wife to tend her family’s farm, caring for flowers and chickens, is not what we’d term “presidential.” His take-home pay, under $800 a month, is enough to make him happy. The other 90% of his income he donates to charity. But even more impressive are his words. At the recent RIO +20 conference, he spoke poetically to other world leaders in a language they had likely never heard before: the language of a person more concerned with human life than with economic gain. The language of happiness, not of consumption.

Here are some excerpts from that speech, translation courtesy of a Uruguayan blogger:

“I ask this question: what would happen to this planet if the people of India had the same number of cars per family as the Germans? How much oxygen would there be left for us to breathe? More clearly: Does the world today have the material elements to enable 7 or 8 billion people to enjoy the same level of consumption and squandering as the most affluent Western societies? Will that ever be possible? Or will we have to start a different type of discussion one day? Because we have created this civilization in which we live: the progeny of the market, of the competition, which has begotten prodigious and explosive material progress. But the market economy has created market societies. And it has given us this globalization, which means being aware of the whole planet.

Are we ruling over globalization or is globalization ruling over us? Is it possible to speak of solidarity and of “being all together” in an economy based on ruthless competition? How far does our fraternity go?”

“Because we do not come into this planet simply to develop, just like that, indiscriminately. We come into this planet to be happy. Because life is short and it slips away from us. And no material belonging is worth as much as life, and this is fundamental. But if life is going to slip through my fingers, working and over-working in order to be able to consume more, and the consumer society is the engine-because ultimately, if consumption is paralyzed, the economy stops, and if you stop economy, the ghost of stagnation appears for each one of us, but it is this hyper-consumption that is harming the planet. And this hyper-consumption needs to be generated, making things that have a short useful life, in order to sell a lot. Thus, a light bulb cannot last longer than 1000 hours. But there are light bulbs that last 100,000 hours! But these cannot be manufactured, because the problem is the market, because we have to work and we have to sustain a civilization of ‘use and discard’, and so, we are trapped in a vicious cycle. These are problems of a political nature, which are showing us that it’s time to start fighting for a different culture.”

Listening to Mujica, one could almost imagine a world governed by his ideals—a culture which promotes the quality of living and not the ceaseless accumulation of goods. Our culture has progressed so far in the pursuit of materialism that it’s become our only export, but I like to imagine that if individual Americans could hear his words, they would be forced to acknowledge his wisdom, and perhaps something could be changed. For such a thing to happen, though, we would have to cease for a moment in proclaiming ourselves the best on earth. We would have to acknowledge that there is something to be learned from our neighbours. That, to our South, someone may hold an answer to the question, “What could make America truly great?” And that someone might be the poorest president-farmer, José Mujica.

"Why do we resign ourselves to being led like docile sheep by the consumer-driven society ?"

Because we don't wish to make do with little or no comfort and ease. We want everything and every new thing. We are not ready to sacrifice our own comfort, nor to ignore the new discoveries which are of great help in our daily life, and a response to our need for personal fulfilment.

Who is ready to dispense with airplanes, cars, mobile or smart-phones, electrical appliances, and if possible a swimming-pool, a big house, holidays abroad, etc. ?
Only the monks and nuns are, because they have chosen that type of life for personal reasons.
But not me.

Muriel hit the bull’s eye: appreciate new technologies, not lag behind, be on the move and learn… While doing so, however, we couldn’t do any longer without our dishwasher, our vacuum cleaner, our car, our smartphone… If we did, we’d get back to the Middle Ages, or even to the Caveman. But we should be aware that progress, hence mass consumption and waste of energy on world level is not necessarily compatible with preservation of our planet Earth today.

Hi everyone,

Guilaine, I think we don't need to return a century back. For people who can afford it, they can insulate better their house; on the whole, they will save  money. They can also buy a big car; some of them consume 3.5 liters per hundred km today.
For people with less means, or for philosophical reasons, they can save money with ride sharing, using train...If they can't afford something, they can save money and get happiness being together with people they enjoy.  Cool

Et mirent en commun le gain et le dommage.
Dans les lacs de la chèvre un cerf se trouva pris.

Et dit : - Nous sommes quatre à partager la proie.
Puis en autant de parts le cerf il dépeça ;

Yes, Guilaine, the planet can satisfy our need, not our greed, as Mahatma Gandhi wisely said. This is the key to globalization, where money provides power, and conversely. The more power, the more greed. The more greed, the more power.

I believe the planet has far from used up its resources to supply food and energy to an exponentially growing population of, say, 8-10 thousand million within a few years. Provided we apply the principle of «sustainable development», as put forward by Uruguay’s president José Mujica. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way in parcatice. Actually, our planet is led by the greed for money and power. The more money the more power. If you can’t join the wealthy or the powerful, too bad for you!

Hi Henri,Gérard, Remy Guilaine everyone
It is true. Ecology is also used for political purposes and some people's aim is to make money.
However little by little we all realize that ecology is a "must" for the generations to come.
An ecological conscience is gradually appearing among people.
http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20091219-242858/Ecological-consciousness

The ecological consciousness  is the growing awareness that the planet Earth is a finite place we share with other peoples? And indeed with all living creatures? And that if, by our ignorance and carelessness, we destroy it, we thereby also destroy ourselves.

Going green is easier than you think. There are little things you can do every day to help reduce greenhouse gases and make a less harmful impact on the environment.
if you are interested, you may be developing a green conscience.
You can see in this forum, we have written many posts about the "green conscience"

There are "little things" we can do every day to help reduce greenhouse gases and make a less harmful impact on the environment. Little things… not very much indeed!

Going green is great. But even if tall oaks from little acorns grow, going green is a drop in the ocean. The 2009 U.N. Copenhagen Conference on climate change and the 2012 U.N. Rio+20 Conference on sustainable development still left a gap between the rich and poor countries. To save our planet and take care of our future generations, urgent decisions have to be made on political and geopolitical level today. Who will make those decisions? Politicians? Yeah! NIMBY: Not In My BackYard. NIMTO: Not In My Term Of Office.

Hi everyone

-> Study links Alzheimer's disease with pesticide DDT
A new study suggests the connection between Alzheimer's in elderly adults and the pesticide DDT might be a strong one. Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine studied 86 people with Alzheimer's and 79 without.

Hi Gérard, everyone

The study says Alzheimer's disease cases are set to increase threefold over the next four decades.

It 's frightening isn't ?

Let's have an active social life, a healthy diet and physical exercises. Will it be enough ?

Add accelerated (I mean investments) medical research too.
