As a studentt in chemistry, decades ago, I was taught about the dangers and rule number one was to never swallow any product.
I then worked as a temp in a lab and was horrified that our products were launched on the market without enough time to study the effect - the consequence was that I never worked in the domain of chemistry though I graduated.
