Hurricane Joaquin caused an atmospheric river in the Carolinas this weekend, leading to record rainfall and flooding. It is common in the Pacific toward California, but rare in the Atlantic. What exactly is an atmospheric river? And how big of a threat could it be? This article and infographic from our archive provides some answers.

In 1861 an atmospheric river that brought storms for 43 days turned California’s Central Valley into an inland sea 300 miles long and 20 miles wide.
