Message  gerardM Jeu 9 Fév - 23:03

NB: "Exercise 1" - the "1" is here because the system refused my title which had to be at least 10-character long. It doesn't mean I'm going to post other exercises. Smile

I recently found this in a file file on my hard disk. I think it comes from a language group on a social network I'm a member of:

The operation would have been a success if only the patient …
a) did not die b) should not die c) would not die d) had not died

At the end of the war, we … with much obsolete, heavy industry.
a) had left b) were left c) had to leave d) were to leave

The conservatives regained power in 1951 and ... office for thirteen unbroken years.
a) held b) have been holding c) were holding d) had held

He said he would reply at once to the shop which ... the most interesting offer.
a) makes b) made c) should make d) used to make

She was appointed in 1998 and ... our president ... .
a) was ... long ago b) has been ... ever since c) was ... long since d) had been ... since when
