Expressions with "dog" Empty Expressions with "dog"

Message  MurielB Jeu 6 Juin - 19:23

The dog days in winter means that when the weather is dull and grey everyone is sad and things are very low.
The dog days in summer means that it is so hot that you can't move (Not very pleasant either ! )
Things are going to the dog means that things are going to the worst possible.
To be top dog means that you are the one who is in command
Let sleeping dogs lie means that you don't have to talk about it anymore.
If you wag the dog, it means that that you are the one who runs everything. (Typical American expression)
The hair of the dog that bit you means The drink you drink in the morning to get over the drinks you drank the night before (I think but Krystyna could let us know)
A barking dog never bites means that someone who makes threats all the time, seldom carries out the threats
A similar expression is His bark is worse than his bite
my dogs are barking means My feet are hurting
In the dog house means In trouble
"I've got to do the 'dog and pony show' for my boss today." I have got to put on a good performance to impress my boss
look like somebody just shot your dog. To appear to be devastated: shocked, stunned, angry and sad all at once.
dog's breakfast means a mess, a failure
It's raining cats and dogs means it's raining heavily
Three dog night It's an Australian term. When it's cold, you sleep with one dog in the bed to keep you warm. Colder is two dogs, but on a really bitter night, it's a Three Dog Night!
It is raining cats and dogs means it is raining heavily

Hi Muriel, hi everyone,

Thank you very much for these expressions I didn't know.
There're lots of others (that I partly know).

There are oodles of English expressions involving dogs.
That's true that the British love dogs. Consider HM Elizabeth II, people say she loves her dogs very much, more than humans (we also say she loves horses).

The British expressions went to American English as well.

~~ edit to add
Queen Elizabeth feeds her dogs herself!!

Hi Muriel, everyone,

Besides the expressions about dogs that you quoted, there are words or compounds (compound words) with dog:

First of all "doggie/doggy" are modifiers; similar to "dog" or "doglike" but these -ie -y suffixes show something which is familiar or loved (these -ie -y suffixes are overused in Australian En though).

- "dog collar" - figuratively speaking, it's the name given to a clergiman's collar
- "dog days" - it's used for -1-very warm weather (scorcher/scorching heat/heat wave); -2-slack period (not busy period)
- "dog-eared"
- "dog-end"
- "dogfight"
- dogged, doggedly, doggedness
- doggerel
- doggo
- doggone
- doggy bag
- doggy fashion
- doggy paddle/dog paddle
- doghouse - to be in the doghouse - to be in the doghouse with sb
- dog in teh manger/dog-in-the-manger
- dog Latin
- dogleg
- dog rose
- dogsbody/general dog
- Dog Star
- dog tag
- dog-tired
- dogtooth
- dog-tooth check
- dogtooth violet
- dogtrot
- dogwatch
- dogwood

Let's not confuse with dogie/dogy which concerns a calf.

As we can see, the number of compounds (I'm not speaking about expressions - compounds are words) shows the links, the feelings of English Speaking People (say Englisg culture) regarding dogs. We don't have as many words or expressions in French.
I'd add there're casual words in the list above and that also shows the familiarity, the feelings...

Yes Gérard there are oodles more and I enjoyed finding them for our forum. You are right, it is because the queen likes dogs Wink
Here are some more.
We used to fight like cats and dogs when we were young!
To be in the dog house [with someone]
If you are in the dog house with someone, you are in a lot of trouble with them!
To work like a dog To work very hard.
I need a rest. I’ve been working like a dog all week.
You can’t teach an old dog new tricks!
= It’s difficult to change old habits or behaviour, or learn new things

Hi Muriel, hi everyone,

I'd have said less strong that "in a lot of trouble with them". To me, "to be in the dog house with somebody" just mean you're no longer good friends (not stronger).

To me, it means (such as in French) that the speaker already knew what you said.
