Pronunciation is more important than grammar
as babies learn this first (of course)... and, that's enough to speak, understand, etc (vocabulary comes with pronunciation lessons);
Grammar is important as well but when you have to write
and that's a second step.
Of course, to obey school needs, you've to master vocab and grammar (shall I be nasty and say that most French English teachers don't know much about the sounds of English.
