Counting is as easy as one, two, three - and in some cultures, three is the highest you’ll ever have to go. But how do other societies that become more complex acquire numbers like 10 or 20? Scientists studied an Australian language family, revealing how languages add, and even lose, higher numbers - and how some languages lasted for thousands of years without them!
