Gérard when we use "but" it is a nice way not to be  too straightforward isn't it ? Personally i often use "anyway"

Muriel, we have a few similar expressions in French but not as many.

I see in these that English speaking people smile more (I mean English speaking people except Brits Smile ).
Voyager léger, Prendre la route, Regarder derrière, Des fourmis dans les jambes, A la barre/au volant, cinquième roue (du carrosse), -, Hors piste, Minute, Brûler le feu, Faire son chemin, Pédale au plancher, -.

In addition, these expressions are casual language while they are rather "impolite" in French and from British mouths.

Gérard if we want to take into account our interlocutor's view point it is better to give a partial agreement isn't it ? (when it's possible of course ! )

Adverbials and their position

Let's not forget:
> In English we never put an adverb between the verb and the object.
> Manner - Place - Time

As for me, I'm happy to have read a lot as I don't know about the above rules but I guess I don't make mistakes (the "music" I often write about gives me the correct position).
