Yes some houses have a smell and it is horrible for those who don't belong to the owners 'family ! I didn't know it was about a survival instinct. Very interesting to know;

Re: You Can't Usually Smell Your Own House
Hi Muriel,
Information we get from outside is often filtered by the brain, here about smelling.
Similar filtering regarding view: what reaches the retina is interpreted and transformed by the brain that eliminates "black" spots due to small damaged cells on the retina and persons involved don't usually know.
If your glasses are dirtied by spots, after a while, the dirty spots are "erased", in fact ignored by the brain.

Hi Gérard !
It's the same for personality traits. When you are familiar with people you don't notice traits people would.

Right Muriel.
I'd add the example of professionals of fragrances who have to frequently go outside to be able to smell correctly.
Other examples with sight are cinema based on weaknesses permitting to see a continuous movement instead of a collection of fixed pictures, and tricks for eyes that make them see fake "events".

I should have spoken about the brain being lured with optical illusions, which is the sign of pictures reinterpreted by the brain.
