Robert Burns Night Empty Robert Burns Night

Message  victoriaD Mer 12 Jan - 15:44

The Polyglots in Falmouth have asked for another poetry eve.
It just happens that on the 25th is the birthday of Robert Burns, scottish poet of the 18th century.
In Scotland, they celebrate his birthday every year by organising "Burns Supper", they dinne together and then recite some of his works in all different manners as it seems that Robby was a serious character.
Well i don't know much about him,so for our poetry eve we're going to have a Burns gathering.
I found a Scot who is delighted to talk to us about the Scottish language as well as read and sing some of his works, somehow i don't think it would work with the French accent. Then the Polygltos who wish can take over to present their favourite poems in whichever language.

So i think you have a cafe polyglot on the 25th, so if you don't know what to do have a thought for Robert Burns.

As a foreign i'm delighted to be presented with some of British culture instead of always doing the otherway round.

I'm going to have a good time so i hope you too whatever you do?
bisous,
vic

Hi Victoria,

Thanks a lot for your message!

I never heard about Robert Burns but though I don't have any meeting on Jan. 25, I will research info on the Web and read about the guy.
On the 25th, I will send an email to my group to celebrate this anniversary.

I'm glad you like the info,

I think it's the Calais group that meets on Tuesdays which will fall on the 25th.
I have to admit that we are cheating as are going to have ours on the 27th as we always meet on Thursdays, but it shall be as good as a true "Burns supper" especially if the whiskey is flowing drunken Embarassed

Have fun Gerard!
A bientot!

Last year, Agnès from Boulogne wrote about Robert Burns. This is what she said
Today, January 25th is Burns night, Robert Burns, Scottish poet (January 25th 1759-July 21st 1796). Burns night is celebrated with a dinner of Haggis, Scotch whisky and recitation of his poetry. Robert Burns is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland; did you know that French used some words from him to make the song :"Ce n'est qu'un au revoir"
Thank you Victoria for your good idea Idea Idea Idea Idea Idea

Do you know that Haggis is made of all the parts of the sheep that the Scottish could not sell to the English.

Robert Burn has given me the idea to contact the cueep( sort of language school in Calais) and organize something with the teachers and students . Why not start on tuesday 25th january or tuesday january 25 (american) tuesday the 25th of january(When you speak)
I am sure to write the correct expressions since I have checked on the net ;-)
Thank you Victoria. Yummy for the dinner !

Muriel,

I guess ( Wink in American "guess" rather means "think") bringing together with cueep is a very good idea!
Anything in common with another language organization is good. I'm happy you get along well with them and that they don't think that you take members to them.
