International Mother Language day 2022: Date, theme, history and significance
The International Mother Language Day is observed every year to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. This day recognises that language and multilingualism can advance inclusion and sustainable development goals, focusing on leaving no one behind.
Today, people are aware of the fact that language plays a vital role in development, in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, but also in strengthening cooperation and attaining quality education for all. This day is observed globally and was approved by UNESCO
According to the census data, more than 19,500 languages and dialects are spoken in India as their mother tongue.
The theme for International Mother Language day 2022, set by UNESCO, is “Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities”
Discussions will be held on the potential role of technology, under this theme, to advance multilingual education and support the development of quality teaching and learning for all.

Re: Mother language day
It is a very important issue for me because we must renew our commitment to the teaching of mother tongues in schools to fight against the suppression of cultural identities and heritage. Certain mother tongues are increasingly under threat with more and more languages disappearing. On average, one language disappears every two weeks, taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. For example, Quechua, which currently counts some eight million speakers in five South American countries - Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina - must be preserved.
