Is teilhard a materialist?
Matter was calling me.”The earth presented itself as that which will endure ; it seemed to be the “indestructible essence from which all emerges and into which it return, the starting point of all growth and the limit of all disintegration”.(W.32)He decided to relax the hold he had on himself and more or less dissolve into a blessing-giving repose. But, on the point of merging with the great All, he suddenly stops:”It was then that faith in life saved me”. Without any real explanation, he decides to reverse his direction, to make a “complete turnabout”. Now he claims:”We must travel with our backs turns to matter and not to try to return to it and to be absorbed in it” (W.32). His effort to dissolve was “hopelessly mistaken, «he had gone:”completely astray”. Now he will identify with the tense and raising of life, that is, the current he will call evolution. Evolution is seen as a movement towards “absolute fuller being, «a progress in more complex structures and away from dissolution, a movement to consciousness and freedom. This account begins his first essay and the reversal of direction underlies all the rest of his writing.

a few questions about "is Teilhard materialist ?"
Teilhard depicts the spiritual power of matter. He blesses matter for being spirit. In which way matter and spirit are part of the same entity ? Is it possible ?
classical science from Newton onwards has produced the materialist idea
of a world deprived of spirit and freedom. does Evolution show that spirit exists ? is man free ? Will universe one day disappear ? Is there a chance of survival ?
Thank you for giving me an answer to all these questions;

When making his reversal, Teilhard had some knowledge of Eastern religions and associated the way of dissolution with the vision of the East. He saw it leading to Nirvana. To understand the claim one could consider the final words of Buddha?:” All compound things dissolve; work out your salvation with fear and trembling. “Teilhard had sought salvation by dissolving into the All. But in doing this he also knew that physicists were saying about the structures of the Universe breaking down (after billions of years) will sink into dissolution and death : this is the Entropy of the Universe!
