Expat mistakes coming out really wrong

When you communicate in a language that is not your own, you are bound to make mistakes. In fact, mistakes are the best way to learn the correct way of saying things.

Re: Expat mistakes coming out really wrong
Hi Muriel,
Thanks for the link to this funny page.
I smiled or laughed as I made such "mistakes" too.
I could realize the number of English words that have a secondary meaning related to sex and especielly to gays (it's similar in French). These are not really mistakes but let's say traps.
An example could be the differences between British and American such as pants, rubber... so mind if your English is British and you are visiting the US.
I don't want to give details but intending to say nice and sweet words to my American girlfriend, I said terrible things - fortunately, she understood what I meant, laughed and explained to me.

Re: Expat mistakes coming out really wrong
Not always funny for everyone.
Using the French word "baiser" is tricky for foreign people especially as the French usage changed and in French literature you can find the verb "baiser" with the inocent meaning of "donner une bise à quelqu'un"; can you see the possible traps for a foreigner who learned French in very good books?
I already told here about an Italian teenaged girl who asked her friend: "Tu couches ?" instead of "Tu vas te coucher ?"

Hi Gerard, Muriel and everyone.
To Gerard : Is it not rather " an Italian teenage girl " instead of " teenaged " Never saw it written like that so I wondered. Thanks !
