Bullshit is not as strong as you wrote. It depends on the context but it can simply be translated into "bêtises".
Even softer for the transitive verb:
C vtr (p prés etc -tt-) rouler, berner [person]; to bullshit one's way out of a tricky situation se tirer d'une situation en bluffant.

You are right. I Wonder why they have made a mistake.
When the tense in the 'if' clause is the past perfect, the tense in the main clause is would/could/may/might/should + infinitive
