- young Americans understand British En
- senior Americans don't speak British, some (not many) can understand British words (the ones who have British relatives ).

Re: 2)English idioms
Yes I understand.
In a first step, we know only one word, in a second step we are happy to know the word used by the other side, then we know both words but don't remember which is what.
So I sometimes wonder who uses elevator and who uses lift

Re: 2)English idioms
I agree. For me an elevator is larger than a lift. The Americans are larger than the Brits !

I'd have said I wish I could... was a conditional.
What about "I wish I were a billionaire"? Isn't it good English? Is "were" the simple past of 'to be"??

Re: 2)English idioms
I love the expression « a little bird told me »
http://www.theidioms.com/a-little-bird-told-me/
http://www.theidioms.com/a-little-bird-told-me/
Origin
Messenger birds and pigeons may have been the source for this phrase. It has been used in the Holy Bible too, Ecclesiastes 10:20. John Heywood explained a slightly different version in 1562 which was edited again in 1906.
The phrase also appears in the Norse legend where Sigurd could hear and understand the birds after he slayed the dragon Fafnir. The birds warned him that Regin would kill him. Sir Richard Wagner also used birds instructing him to steal a helmet and ring through a small song. The communication of and with the birds is speculated as a source of origin or at least popularity of the phrase.
