Hi Krystyna, Muriel, hi everyone,

I don't know why the British laugh at "swimming costume" because that's still a usual term in Australia ! Rolling Eyes
But we like short and pithy, so more likely you would hear ...
cozzie
swimmers
bathers

And, as an aside, do you know what a "birthday suit" is ?
I'd like to know more about this "pithy", what d'ya think, Muriel?

Hi everyone,

Nobody mentioned "Charlie"!

- in the UK, a charlie is a fool
- in the US, a charlie is a guy who lives in the night celebrating oodles of events (fêtard)
- it's also a slang word for cocaine

Hi Gérard, hi Muriel,

Pithy is one of my favourite words !

In French, it is "piquant" or "concis" ... but pithy sounds so much more exotic, don't you think ?

PS, if someone had a speech impediment and couldn't pronounce S, then pithy would be their word for pissy !
LOL, which means inebriated and/or soaked in urine !

LOL

If I understand well many French people would pronounce piffy / pissy instead of pithy, no?

Hi

@ Krystyna: I need you...

I find out in my dictionary:
- to play Simon says = jouer à pigeon vole
- to have a game of Simon says = jouer à Jacques a dit

But these are 2 differents games!!

Hi Gérard,

I think "Simon Says" is "Jacques a dit"

What is the translation of pigeon vole ?
A flying pigeon ?

Krystyna,

>What is the translation of pigeon vole ?
>A flying pigeon ?
Yes but I should have put a cap as it's the name of a game: "Pigeon vole".

A gang of kids is playing.
One says like "pigeon vole" or "oiseau vole" or "coccinelle vole"
The players have to raise the hand if it's true.
If one of them raises the hand when the leader says "vache vole" (cows don't fly in France Wink ), (s)he gets a forfeit.
