Sinkholes are common in areas where the underlying rock is easily dissolved by groundwater—and there's currently no way to prevent the occurrence of one.

The more than 200-foot wide and 50-foot deep sinkhole that swallowed homes is far from the state's first.

We can read more and more often about "sinkholes". These sinkholes appear in Siberia, in Florida, around the Dead Sea, etc.
They're due to underground waters, to melting ground, to level increase...
We also see cliffs coastline destroyed by sea/ocean water "swallowing" buildings...
