Hi everyone, hi Gérard !
"go for a picnic" is not incorrect, but "go on a picnic" is more common. This is what word reference told me

There're other common expressions:
- make redundant
- dismiss
- to let go
How do you set it?

Thanks for the extra vocabulary meaning "to make redundant" etc. But what do you mean with "how do you set it" ? Is is "when do you use the different expressions ? "Gérard a écrit:How do you set it?

Re: American English at State
Muriel,
You had 3 words, I added 3 others.
My question means: Are the 3 new words close to one of the 3 "old"?
- to resign is decided by the guy who leaves
- to lay down is a decision of the firm et concerns a group of people
- to fire is decided by the firm and often concerns one guy who failed.
Can you put the 3 new words under the "3 definitions"? Are these new words British or American?

Re: American English at State
Muriel,
I'm not 100% certain but for me:
- "to make redundant" is more British (but also used in the US), "to lay off" is more American; both are used for economic reasons
- "to dismiss" is British, same meaning as "to let go": used for faulty reason.
Muriel, "to let go" doesn't mean "to resign".

Did you know that luggage is not used in the plural form? Learn how to use measure words with "luggage" and other non-count nouns. Is this "a piece of cake" for you? ("Piece of cake" is an idiom that means easy.) #AmericanEnglish
