Halloween

Halloween is originally a Celtic festival of Irish origin: the Celtic New Year! About 3000 years ago, the Celtic calendar did not end on December 31st, but on October 31st. And this last night of the year was the night of the god of death (Samain or Samhain).

In the evening before All Saints' Day (1 November), children in costumes travel from house to house, asking for treats with the phrase "Trick or treat". The "treat" is usually some form of candy, although in some cultures money is given instead.
