Voici qui peut être intéressant.
Il s'agit d'un message envoyé par un expat qui a eu le grand bonheur de partir travailler à Redmond, Washington (Microsoft) depuis une dizaine d'années :

Voici une liste des choses que je prenais pour acquis en France et dont je ne me rendais pas compte de la chance que j'avais.
1. Être soigner est un droit. //ici 12 000$ pour un platre ou un aller en ambulance
2. Laposte c'est le pire gestionnaire de courrier du monde. // attend de voir laposte américaine
3. La télé française c'est pourri. //du caviar comparé a la tv américaine
4. Les routes en France sont d'une qualité passable. // attend de voir la merde ici. Les routes de France sont géniales.
5. La sncf c'est de la daube. Toujours en retard ! // ahahah attend de voir le train américain. Et la vitesse aussi rapide qu'une calèche
6. Internet c'est cher. // je paye 160$ par mois contre 29 euros en France
7. L'électricité c'est normal que ça marche tout le temps. // des qu'on a un peu de vent on perd L'électricité ici. Pendant plusieurs jours
8. La retraite c'est automatique. // ici on cotise par soit même. On doit faire nos propres calcule et découvrir qu'on a besoin de 1 million de dollars a trouver..
9. La crèche en France c'est super cher !. // par enfant je paye 2000$ par mois.
10. Les crédits maison c'est entre 0 et 4%. // suivant l annee cela fluctue entre 3 et 9 %. Mon crédit est a 4% et tout le monde dit que j'ai de la chance

Autre inconvénient de la vie aux US : Julien semble avoir oublié l'orthographe et la grammaire Wink

J'ai croisé Julien plusieurs fois à Paris et aussi en 2008 à Redmond, avant qu'il ne soit embauché.
Je suis surpris qu'après 10 ans, Julien vive encore à la mode française !!??
- Snailmail : c'est ringard ça ! et en plus il est informaticien
- les routes Fr - on voit qu'il a quitté la France, ça a bien changé en 10 ans
- qui prend le train aux USA ? personne
Notez son "crédit de 4 %"... j'ai un peu parlé du "scoring" ci-dessus... c'est quelque chose d'individuel : tout événement financier personnel est enregistré dans une base de données nationale, visible par tous les professionnels et aboutit à un indice de confiance perso qui permettra -ou pas- l'accès à la location d'appart, location de voiture, crédit bancaire et son taux, etc.

Hi everyone,

Months/Years ago, we posted something about "Hump Day" which is an expression for Wednesday.
Hump here means that from Sunday to Wednesday it's harder and harder as tiredness increases; from Wednesday on tiedness decreases as weekend and hope are approaching, hence "hump day" as Wednesday is the top point of the road.

By the way, note the similarities b/w "hump" and "bump" (identical spelling except a letter).

However "Hump day" is not known by all of the natives and to my explanations (Hump day is Wednesday), a friend responded: "hump day" is everyday!! Smile

Take a closer look at "hump"...

I never led stats on the subject but take care: my experience taught me that quite every single word is a double-entendre and among the secondary meanings, we've sex domain or gay domain.
So, you're warned! Smile

Take care of the context, avoid slang and even informal language unless you're sure.
If there're several double-entendres in your sentence (it also depend on the tone and the smile), you might be supposed to speak about gays or sex.

NB: I posted this in "American culture" but it applies to Australian, and even British.
French language is a bit behind ie our words have slang meanings less often but...

Take a look at the pronunciations:
- Who & whose have a special pronunciation hu: hu:z

- When and the other pronouns are pronounced wen in British English
- When and the other pronouns are pronounced hwen in American English

Despite the difference Br/Am, Who & whose are still specific pronunciationwise.

Weird isn't it?

What I described as a respectful behavior in the States is becoming a big problem and people are fed up especially in this period of nationalism...

Here's a posting from an American friend of mine -Susan- on a famous social network:

Susan - People from all over the world are wishing tea friends a Merry Christmas. India, China, Russia, Japan, Europe. An International handshake. Meanwhile I go to the grocery store and the poor checker is so confused as to what she can or cannot say that she said, "Happy" and sighed. I guess one fills in the blank.
Diane - It's getting ridiculous. I say happy Christmas and if I know their celebration I will say happy Hanukkah etc. Otherwise you just end up like that checker lost. You can't please everyone so I celebrate Christmas and thus Happy Christmas. Are we going to start this with the New Year too? And so on. Crazy making.

J'ai une bonne expérience des Australiens : c'est incroyable, ils ont leurs expressions, leur vocabulare, leur accent bien sûr, et ils ne supportent pas les mots qui n'ont pas 2 syllabes - si le mot a plus de 2 syllabes, ils le tronquent et mettent -y ou -ie à la fin, si le mot a moins de 2 syllabes, ils en ajoutent une, avec -y/-ie à la fin ! Ceci dit, lorsqu'on comprend ce qu'ils disent, ils sont très sympa, très marrant (ils n'arrêtent pas de raconter des blagues, comme nos Méridionaux) !

Les Australiens eux, sont très marrants !
Dans la rue ou entre amis, ils n'alignent pas 10 mots sans éclater de rire ; ils n'arrêtent pas de dire des plaisanteries.
Il y a de très grosses différences entre la langue parlée en Australie et les langues américaines ou britanniques !
Comme je l'ai écrit plus haut, ils n'aiment pas les mots qui n'ont pas 2 syllabes mais le problème est que chacun s'aligne sur 2 syllabes à sa manière (pas tous la même) !
Comme dit plus haut, mon ami Wayne, pilote de ligne sur United, me disait ne pas parvenir à comprendre ce que disent les Australiens (parlant entre eux).
Ainsi, il est très difficile de comprendre un groupe d'Oz parlant entre eux (éclats de rire, mots tronqués, jargon, etc.)
Par contre, les Australiens comprennent facilement les étrangers et sont très sympa. Ils comprennent bien car pour se comprendre entre eux, ils se fient souvent au contexte (ils ne se comprennent pas à 100 %).

Un temps, j'ai cru que c'était par efficacité et pour gagner en rapidité qu'ils tronquaient les mots longs et je trouvais ça intelligent mais non, les mots d'une syllabe sont allongés à 2 !
Exemples de mots de 2 syllabes : brolly, hanky, thingy...

L'orthographe est "thingee" ; désolé, je n'ai qu'une oreille française et ne fais pas bien
la différence entre thingy et thingee (probablement durée mais je ne perçois pas).
