Muriel, I was refering to the complexity of chemical names/formulae such as Olivine with a formula (Mg+2, Fe+2)2SiO4 (Wikipedia -Olivine).

Good luck for Am kids who will prefer to become a Basketball player or a Finance trader.

Gérard I agree that complex names are not pleasant for  children and tend to disgust them from learning !

Olivine is a name we rarely have to use except if we're a specialist.
Olivine is particularly complex as it's not a pure chemical, it's a mixture.

Gérard it is very difficult to pretend you are laid-back and cool when you are not. You can easily make a mistake and not say the right sentence properly.

Something funny that happened today.

I don't know why but I was speaking about the rewards for horses: I said the French name was "flot".
I don't know about the etymology of this word but I wouldn't be surprised if it were English (because Brits love horses and -as usual- organized many sports re horses).
The funny thing is that the word in English is "rosette"!!
So, I consider "flot" to be English and their word sounds perfect French.
