Re: Dawn French Fan Club 3
I write "table mat" with a space.MurielB a écrit:...
Paper plate mats (Sets de table en papier) Tablemats are important and define the sitting eating area for the individual,
Mat, in English, is used for all sorts of flat objects of small dimensions such as (in French) tapis (petit), essuie-pieds/paillasson, tapis d'exercice (Yoga), dessous-de-plat, napperon, set de table...
Let's not confuse b/w carpet and mat.
Something tricky for the French: we borrowed the word "set" from English but we've to know that set is usually something with several items (FRench groupe, ensemble, collection, série, etc.); Krystyna was trapped as she thought the price was low regarding a table set (she thought she'd have at least 2 for the price )

You're welcome Muriel.MurielB a écrit:Tx Gérard for all these explanations !
Often, a language/jargon has lots of words in a domain where there're specialists: technical specialty (unskilled people don't make a difference between tools, they use a generic name with a qualifie while professionals have a different word for every tool); similarly, French language has several words in the domains of cooking, wars/military area, etc.
Here, it's funny as the French easily use "tapis" (we don't care much about the dimension of a carpet or a mat) and the English easily use "mat" (they don't care much if they put their feet on it, or a saucepan, or a plate...).
