Universities must make languages relevant
Hi there.
This article speaks about the UK.
-> (The Guardian) Universities must make languages relevant
The numbers of students studying languages degrees is at its lowest in a decade – universities must make their academic study more pertinent, argues Katrin Kohl
• UK students taking languages degrees at record low
...
The contrast between the plummeting number of undergraduates in modern foreign language (MFL) courses and the soaring number of students in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) subjects gives an insight into the power of policy-makers to influence the fate of academic subjects. While the government has been pumping funding into Stem subjects, modern languages have suffered under successive governments from underfunding and a lack of joined-up policies.

Re: Universities must make languages relevant
Hi everyone
I have heard in today's news that bilingualism (French/German) in Strasbourg's nursery schools is widely developed. I hope it will encourage universities to make languages more relevant. .

Re: Universities must make languages relevant
Hi Muriel,
I'm surprised!
I can understand German is important for people living near the border and going to Germany to work or do the shopping but German is not the language spoken 60 years ago, it was a dialect pretty different from German.

I have also heard that Calais town hall is ready to give a subsidy to help lower crossing costs to "calaisiens" who will work in England.
Language will be more and more important for the people who need it to live in a country and work in another one.
For Calais it is very good because Calais region is poor while across the Channel it is far richer and offers jobs for us.
