The Disasters of War - 1800-2014- temporary exhibition in the Louvre-Lens

The Disasters of War are a series of 82 prints created by Spanish paints and printmaker Francisco Goya . The Disasters of War are also the title of the exhibition currently held in the Louvre-Lens Museum . While war always occupied a core place in societal values ( it was one of the foundations of patriotism) yet its necessity and inevitability has been increasingly discredited . The exhibition looks at how artist contributed to a growing disenchantment with the war, a movement initiated at the turn of the nineteenth century during the Napoleonic campaigns.
This exhibition gives us to understand this change and why we no longer like war.
While depictions of war in art had always been dominated by the heroic battle, it was now increasingly represented in all its facets, including its most dreadful consequences  on humans, nature, cities and objects.
In twelve sequences, the exhibition highlights pivotal episodes  in this little-known history, through some twenty conflicts, and four hundred and fifty works by almost two hundred artists.
As it is a temporary exhibition it will end on the 6th October 2014 .
